MANY GLACIER LODGE

A CENTENNIAL RENOVATION INSPIRED BY THE PAST

Perched on the shores of Swiftcurrent Lake in Glacier National Park, this historic jewel was built in 1914-15 by the Great Northern Railway. The 200-room landmark hotel marked its centennial with a series of renovations including a remodel of its magnificent dining room in 2011 and lobby in 2016.

“We wanted to reinterpret the original appearance as it looked in the 1920’s and 1930’s, when it had wonderful Japanese paper lanterns, and to capture the spirit of that design with LED technology and recyclable, sustainable materials,” explained Nan Anderson of Anderson Hallas Architects. The design team worked from historical black-and-white photos to recreate the look of lanterns floating randomly in mid-air. Hammerton crafted over 100 custom fixtures to bring that vision to life, using a heat forming process to make shades from 3form resin in a variety of shapes and colors.

Weather and wildlife -- including grizzly bears, mating moose, and bighorn sheep -- made the recent lobby renovation in 2016 particularly challenging. Read the full story here:
